The poverty of worldly love

It is a poor reflection on worldly love that the average length of a marriage that falls apart in England and Wales is about a dozen years.

Birds of a feather flock together, but these worldly lovebirds fly apart.

Those who claimed to love each other, and then lose it so quickly, need to learn about Christian love.

The love of the godly lasts forever and does not fall apart.

Pity the ungodly world who do not know what godly love is.

Marital love that falls apart is not godly love. It is not even a shadow of godly love. A shadow is the darkness behind the substance. This temporary worldly love is a shadow of love – the darkness that hides behind the substance.

Godly love begins when the godly meet each other and then it continues “from the first day until now”.

The apostle Paul thanked God for the Philippians and “for your fellowship in the Gospel from the first day until now.”

Philippians 1:5.

Let me recommend Christian fellowship to my readers, which begins through fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ 1Jn 1:3.

“That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that you also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.”

1John 1:3.

The apostle John continues: “If we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ God’s Son cleanses us from all sin.”

1John 1:7.

The apostle Peter tells us that it lasts forever.  1Pe 1:22-23 teaches us that the fellowship of the godly never comes to an end. You can read more about it here.

Updates:

17 Apr 2025: King Charles III in an interfaith speech said: “love is an important virtue across religions” [at 13:13 hrs]. Almost all religions talk about it as well as celebrity performers. Most pop songs also extol love. Only some people extol hatred, so why is there so much hatred in the world? The answer is that they cannot define love and worldly love is tendentious, partial, temporary and insufficient to deal with the human condition.
