Extraordinary providences and the existence of God

I propose an easier argument for the existence of God than you have probably heard so far.

There are a few standard arguments for the existence of God, but not everyone can understand them. They are known as the ontological argument (the most perfect Being necessitates His existence), the teleological argument (design and fine-tuning implies a Designer), the moral argument (the ultimate source of morality is God) and the cosmological argument (cause and effect implies a First Cause creating and upholding the Universe).

I propose a new argument, one that is easier to understand and which impacts upon everybody’s experience to such an extent that it is difficult to ignore it, or more to the point, why should you ignore this one? One may ignore the other arguments with the excuse that “I am not a philosopher” speculating about theories, but this new argument is not so easy to ignore because it is personal. It is possible to ignore it, but in doing so one is ignoring one’s own “lived experience.”

I recently drew attention to extraordinary providences in our lives.  I do not mean chance events, although we experience many of these.  Extraordinary providences are altogether unusual, and you recognize them because they are so unusual.

Extraordinary providences differ from chance events. The probability of winning the lottery is very low but someone must win. But extraordinary providences are events that might never have happened, but they did, and with such low probability that it is almost zero, like meeting your next door neighbour on a three-day visit to a desert island. Sometimes they are compounded with additional extraordinary providences, possibly involving other people, making them even more extraordinary.

How do we explain these?

We all experience chance events, but we also experience extraordinary providences. Many people do not try to explain these extraordinary providences, dismissing them as mere chance events, just as we dismiss dreams. However, there must be an explanation for such extraordinary events especially when they keep crossing our path. Remember, they might never have occurred and their probability of happening is almost zero. So why do they happen so regularly?

They happen to everybody in different places at different times. I have yet to meet someone who does not admit that they have experienced such extraordinary events. As they occur at different times in different places, it suggests that there is at least some larger force of some kind creating these almost impossible coincidences. However, these extraordinary events are only intelligible to us because we have minds to discern how extraordinary they are. They would not mean anything to animals. The animals don’t notice them but rational creatures do. We think about them and notice how extraordinary they are. It needs intelligence to discern how unique they are. However, this implies something more. How does a mere force produce something intelligible to us? This suggests that this unknown global or universal force must be intelligent.

How is it that the universe is producing so many extraordinary events in the lives of so many people?

It suggests that there is a universal force at work to produce such highly unlikely extraordinary events. Pause here, and think. A universal force or a global force? If it is a force at all, it is surely more than global unless one thinks “mother Earth” is producing them. Who or what is mother Earth? Having begun to think about the issue, we can go further and say that such highly unlikely extraordinary events are not simply random, nor is it a constant force like gravity, which affects everything.

It is a force that interacts with our existence at the level of our mind. It interacts intelligently and specifically. Further, it is not just intelligent; it must be reading our mind in order to create a meaningful extraordinary providence. Such a force has a word to describe it – God. Call it what you like, but it is a global or universal intelligent force that is communicating with mankind. We do not need UFOs to discern that this Intelligence is communicating with every human being.

So what do we call such a global or universal force interacting with rational creatures in this way? We have a word – God.

God enters the experience of everyone

God has created these coincidences in our life, and sometimes they are only in our thoughts! Can you deny that you have such experiences? God is reading your mind, and further than that, these extraordinary events suggest that He is interested in drawing your attention to His Own existence. It is just as well that God is good. How would you like a malevolent force reading your mind? For your peace of mind, the Bible tells us that the devil cannot read your thoughts although he can read your body language and behaviour.

This shows that God is not some distant Person Who is indifferent to what is going on. Deism thinks God created things like winding up a clock and has left things to wind down without His intervention. This does not agree with your personal extraordinary providences. You have to face the reality of your own “lived experiences”.

SETI (the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) is looking for “a signal” from space; here we have signals all around us. This is why the Bible tells us that those who have ignored God will be “without excuse” Rom 1:20.

What are the consequences?

You should realise that God is not so far away from you as you thought.

This argument for the existence of God is easy to understand and impacts personally on us all.  Will you ignore the next extraordinary providence and dismiss it like a dream, or will you consider that God is speaking to you, saying, “I am here and I am watching you as in individual, impacting your mind.  Will you now seek to know Me?”

Learning about God

Many of the godly began their spiritual lives by realising that God was impacting upon their natural life, very often in different ways, but this led them to seek the LORD, to read the Bible and to pray to Him.

God has not left you to flounder in the darkness but He is regularly intimating to you His presence. Will you begin to pray to Him for guidance?

Extraordinary providences are a very preliminary stage in this communication. God is simply intimating: “I am here.”

God is not frustrated by your refusal to listen. Rather, He is breaking into the arrogance of sinful mankind to intimate that He is here, so that mankind will be without excuse in the Day of Judgment Rom 1:20.

God expects and has every right to expect our attention. Extraordinary providences are saying: “Pay attention that I am here, and I have created extraordinary providences to make you realise this.” It is a hint for sinful creatures who does not deserve any attention from God, nevertheless He gives them His attention.

He is not ‘reaching out’ by way of ‘wanting’ communication with us, because He can do so any time He wants, but He is revealing the darkness in men’s minds who do not understand what these extraordinary providences mean.

Lived experience

We do not need present-day miracles, visions, dreams, revelations nor mystical philosophies to demonstrate God to us, because we already have His speaking to us all the time, in these extraordinary providences in your ordinary life, which you experience so regularly.

He is not saying to us, turn left or turn right. Rather He is saying something much more profound and extraordinary, demonstrating to us that this is divine interaction.

An Ontological experience

To realise this is an ontological shock – an earthquake in your very being as you experience and realise that God has been speaking to you so frequently and you never realised it. There are examples of this in the Bible and the godly can testify to it personally.

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead is another ontological shock. You will never be the same again when you realise its truth and its implications. It proves that death is not the end, and that there is life after death.

Nevertheless, which is more readily understandable? Christ’s resurrection from the dead changes everything, but so do these extraordinary providences you have been ignoring.

You should no longer just ignore them. Many people do not know about Jesus Christ nor about His resurrection from the dead. They do not care about it, but they cannot get away from these extraordinary providences in their own life.

A series of highly improbable events combining together cannot be attributed to chance. To use the ‘chance’ argument is the secular equivalent of “the God of the gaps”.

This particular blogpost is prompted by an extraordinary providence witnessed collectively, so extraordinary and collectively verifiable, that it is worth recording. On 21st Oct 2025 my friend Dave posted on our astronomical WhatsApp Group that he had been reading a particular book on the 4th Crusade. Memoirs or Chronicle of the Fourth Crusade and the Conquest of Constantinople, by Geoffrey De Villehardouin. He could not obtain it in Inverness so his local Inverness library obtained a copy from the British Library in London. He was surprised to note that he was the first person to borrow it from the British Library since 1925, one hundred years ago! Within 24 hours, another person on our WhatsApp Group posted the picture below to him. So what?

The highlighted book on this shelf is the same book that Dave had been reading. The other WhatsApp person had read Dave’s WhatsApp message and she saw this same book in the library of Rice University, Houston, USA, 4,500 miles away, although she was not looking for it, and sent this picture to him on 22nd Oct 2025! We could all testify to this extraordinary providence, especially as both Dave and the other correspondent had additional extraordinary providences associated with this one event. As I said earlier, when there are conjoint extraordinary providences they become even more extraordinary. I am not asking you believe something you cannot verify but, believe it or not, the point is that you have your own extraordinary providences that you can verify to yourself, and you ought not to ignore what this means.

This collective event prompted me that it was time for me to publicize my new proof of the Being of God, from the personal extraordinary providences witnessed by everybody.

God breaks into the lives of ordinary people by extraordinary means. He delivers a life-changing ontological shock that changes people’s perception and beliefs. It does not mean that they are born again, such as Jesus teaches Jn 3:3,5,7, but it does mean that they will be without excuse for not following through until they find communion and fellowship with God.

Where do you begin?

It is not very difficult. God has always existed, so we may discount those religious sects that arose in 19th-century America. Why would God wait such a long time before He begins telling us things that we need to know? Surely He has spoken to mankind from the beginning?

There are only four or five major religions that can claim antiquity. These are Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism. Islam is a late beginner, arising in the 7th century AD but with no contemporary records until the next century. The first reference to Mecca is in 741AD, located in southern Turkey 1200 miles away, and long after the death of Mohammed.

So it should not take long for a researcher to discover that Judaism and Christianity are the only global religions with any proper claim for sufficient antiquity. A serious enquirer, responding to God’s own promptings in their lives, should begin to pray to God and to read the world’s most ancient Book, the Bible, which one may expect God to keep available throughout man’s history. This is where to begin, reading the Bible and praying to God to reveal Himself more clearly to you. Even the apostle Paul needed this. God revealed His Son Gal 1:16 even to this arch-persecutor of Christians.

What do you do if you are forced to accept that there is a God right now, and that He knows your thoughts?

Jesus said: “Fear not therefore, for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed, and hid, that shall not be known” Mat 10:26 and “There is nothing covered that shall not be revealed; neither hid that shall not be known” Lk 12:2.

What are the consequences?

Suppose everybody knew what everybody else was thinking – the world would be a very different place. Meanwhile, when people realise that God knows it all, and will hold us to account, it will modify and improve human behaviour.

Further, God reminds us that when the Books are opened all human deeds and thoughts will be revealed and known throughout eternity. Meanwhile, these extraordinary providences show us that God knows all that is going on, right now. Job said to God: “I know that Thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from Thee” Job 42:2. There is no hiding place from God and extraordinary providences demonstrate this.

What lessons should we draw?

It is important to draw the correct lessons from such things. By definition, an extraordinary province is something that has a very low probability of occurring, but it is more than this.

Most people can observe a series of extraordinary provinces that amount to almost an impossibility and I have mentioned a tangible example above.

Some are so extraordinary that people will not talk about them lest their companions will think they are mad.

Even those who do not believe in miracles have to face the reality of these extraordinary providences in their own life, and occasionally in the lives of others.  In effect, they seem almost miraculous, so that some people describe them as “spooky“, but this is not only a testimony to God’s providence knocking on the door of their heart for attention, but it also misreads God’s providence and demeans God their Creator Who is speaking to them in His providence – these co-incidences are God-incidents.

There are many coincidences that people ignore in their lives, but they will prove at the Day of Judgment to be testimony from God as to His Being and presence, that they are accountable to Him, so that they will be “without excuse” at the Day of Judgment.

Coincidental providences

Are extraordinary providences just chance events that we should ignore, like dreams? A chance event is not really an extraordinary one.  I am referring to those almost impossible events with a tiny probably of happening; read again what I wrote at the beginning of this blogpost.  When they multiply together, or combine with someone else’s extraordinary events, these are really noteworthy. What should we learn from them?

God breaking into our lives with these intimations of the almost impossible.

The godly continue to experience extraordinary providences and they interpret them as God’s continued oversight of their lives and even as God setting things up for them.

For those people who do not believe in God’s intervention and in miracles, how do you account for these almost miraculous events?

God is speaking to you and you will yet discover this, but will it be in time to find peace with Him or will it be too late?

“Take note: these are the mere edges of His divine decree, how on the one hand we hear from Him a mere impression of any matter and, on the other hand, who will understand the thunder of His power?”

Job 23:14

Man made in the image of God

I have developed other arguments for the Existence of God from man’s own being, from his being made in “the image of God” Gen 1:26-27. As rational creatures not only can we think about God but we can commune with our Creator. The wonder of man’s capacity to reason is expressed by theoretical astrophysicists who find it remarkable that mankind can reason about the Universe itself. This fact should make these thinking people go beyond their physics and by analysing mankind himself to discern his Creator.

A list of links to other extraordinary providences:

6 Aug 2005: the death of Robin Cook described on a previous blogpost.

17 May 2011: others acknowledge “a benevolent force behind things.” However, a force is not benevolent. Benevolence means “good will” and indicates Personality. “Glory to God in the highest, and peace on Earth, good will toward men” Luke 2:14.

8 Oct 2018: another extraordinary event.

15 Dec 2025: an extraordinary providence witnessed only a few weeks ago by the BBC “live on air” [at 1’50] described as “incredible odds” and “utterly incredible”.
