Do PDFs save paper?

PDF files are excellent, but do they save paper?

How many emails do you receive that ask you to consider whether you need to print it out?  Our environmentally conscious age is trying to save paper.

PDFs are excellent as one can highlight them, annotate them, remove the annotation, change them, add to them, etc.  However, what about those PDFs that are secured not simply against tampering with the content but even from highlighting them?

The effect of this is that one needs to print it out and highlight the print out.  Where have our environmentally friendly policies gone?

My solution?  Campaign against such PDFs  by telling those who use them that it is a waste of your time to read them if one cannot mark what one thinks is relevant for future review.
