BBC 2 showed Louis Theroux’s 2015 documentary My Scientology Movie last night.
It demonstrates yet another example of the cynical manipulation of mankind’s religious conscience. It is but one of many examples. Theroux could not understand how intelligent, apparently normal, kind, well-meaning people, and Tom Cruise is one of the most high-profile scientologists, could be taken in by such manipulation. In spite of all his documentaries, beginning in January 1998 with “Born Again Christians”, Theroux is none the wiser.
True Christianity has exposed such manipulation for centuries, but with the decline of true Christianity, people fall foul of religious manipulation repeatedly. It demonstrates that people have a religious conscience, but it needs to be better informed if it is not to be manipulated. People need a Christian conscience.
Jesus Christ warned against this well-known feature of false religion: ‘Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves’ Mat 7:15. Manipulation is a characteristic of false prophets, who deceive many Mat 24:11.
On the other hand, the Holy Spirit teaches spiritual discernment to the godly and Jesus teaches: ‘My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me’ Jn 10:27. ‘A stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they do not acknowledge the voice of strangers’ Jn 10:5.
The apostle Paul warned that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men but in the power of God 1Cor 2:5.
It is manifest that those in Louis Theroux’s documentary know next to nothing about true Christianity and have much to learn about it. Jesus says: ‘learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest unto your souls’ Mat 11:29.
