The Book of books – the Christian Bible

Today is my good lady’s birthday and I wondered what blogpost to write.

The solution came this evening at the family worship with the family and our grandchildren. As usual, we read the Bible and sang a Psalm in course – reaching Ps 131, which appropriately spoke about well-behaved children. The Bible always has something to teach us. In a few days’ time, God willing, we will sing Ps 133 about the blessedness of brethren dwelling together in unity.

The children took turns to read what Jesus says to us in the Bible. These grandchildren have a good beginning in life – quality family time learning to read big words from the excellent literature of the King James Version of the English Bible, and learning about Jesus and His teaching, with the associated benefits of daily Bible reading.

Then we prayed for the family at home and away from home. It is a blessing to be able to commit one’s domestic cares twice daily to our God, our Creator and Preserver. We thanked God that we had the Bible in which we learn about Jesus and what He has to say to us

A unique book

After dwelling on today’s biblical teaching, I noted that the Bible is a unique book. The Bible is “the Book of books”. Parts of the Bible were among the first books to be printed, and the Bible has been continually in print since printing was invented. God’s Word has been available from the beginning of recorded history.

Other books that were written alongside the Bible are either in the dust or gathering dust in various libraries around the world.

Significantly, this book – the Bible – continues to be the world’s best seller. The Holy Spirit Who gave us the Bible continues to preserve it. Having divinely inspired it 2Tim 3:16, the Holy Spirit has divinely preserved it Ps 12:6-7. What makes people think that the Bible is just another book? Ignorance, prejudice, lack of familiarity or simply wishful thinking? Surely it is time for such people to wipe the dust off their Bible, if they still have one, and to familiarise themselves with Jesus in its pages.

Meanwhile the godly are thankful to God that He has singularly preserved His Word from generation to generaton, and from place to place, and that it is now available online for a global audience to read.

A good message and a Happy Birthday, Elizabeth.
